Winter. My most hated time of year. Because of my distaste for the cold and snow, my creative abilities take a hit – but I am always trying to find a way to stay inspired and motivated. It’s difficult, but I must keep moving.
I decided to pay a visit to my Triumph Daytona 675 that I put away last month for the winter. I had yet to do any specific shoot with this bike since I purchased it and I had some free time this weekend to myself. I packed up my gear and headed out.
When you have powerful lights, you don’t need much room to separate the subject from what’s around it. Alienbees from Paul C. Buff help me with that.
In any case, I have been accustomed to a 2 light setup and i’m having a lot of fun with the versatility the combo brings. I may at some point bring in a 3rd, but It may not be necessary.
So here is what I came up with. Click the images for the full size.
a quickr pickr post
Gear used -
• Nikon D3s
• Nikkor 24-70 2.8G
• Tiffen Circular Polarizer
• 3x Pocketwizard Plus II’s
• 2x Paul C Buff AB1600 strobes
• Paul C Buff 86″ PArabolic Light Modifier (PLM)
Setup shot

So as you can see – it does not take much space to black much of the surroundings out. Some slight editing was done in post however.
EDIT: I should clarify – when I mentioned “slight editing” the only real post processing done was cloning out harsh reflections and the corner of the light stand in some shots. The black background was achieved by using high powered focussed light and a very small aperture to knock out the surroundings. Putting total focus on the Triumph.
Some examples to see straight from the camera at the time to demonstrate how the background has been blacked out naturally:

Hope you enjoyed! If you have any questions, please feel free to email or comment.
